The Golden Triangle of Odisha: A Complete Puri–Konark–Bhubaneswar Itinerary

If you're planning your first trip to Odisha, the Golden Triangle — Puri, Konark and Bhubaneswar — is the itinerary almost every local guide will point you toward first, and for good reason: it fits three very different, genuinely significant sites into a short, manageable loop.

Why this is the classic route

• Puri gives you the Jagannath Temple, one of India's most significant pilgrimage sites, plus a real working beach town
• Konark gives you the Sun Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of India's most architecturally remarkable monuments
• Bhubaneswar, the "Temple City," gives you Lingaraj Temple and the Udayagiri & Khandagiri caves, plus it's where most travellers' flights land

The three sites sit close enough together that you're never looking at a long transfer day — the entire loop is comfortably drivable in a single day if you had to, though 3 days lets you actually enjoy each stop.

A 3-day / 2-night itinerary

Day 1 — Puri Morning Jagannath Temple darshan (go early to beat both the heat and the crowds), followed by time at Puri's Golden Beach. Afternoon free for local markets or rest; evening at leisure by the beach.

Day 2 — Konark, via Puri Morning drive to Konark (35–40 km, 45–60 minutes). Allow 2–3 hours at the Sun Temple complex — it's larger than it looks from photos, and the carvings reward slow viewing. Return to Puri for the night, or continue directly toward Bhubaneswar if your schedule is tighter.

Day 3 — Bhubaneswar Drive to Bhubaneswar (roughly 65 km from Konark, about 1.5 hours). Visit Lingaraj Temple, then the Udayagiri and Khandagiri caves in the afternoon. If time allows, Nandankanan Zoological Park (famous for its white tigers) makes a good half-day add-on, particularly for families.

Best time of year

October to February, the same window that works for weddings — dry, cool evenings, comfortable for the walking involved at both Konark and the Udayagiri/Khandagiri caves. April–June is hot, especially for the outdoor stretches at Konark; the monsoon (July–September) is workable but brings rain-related delays.

Budget

A cab-and-guide package (sedan, 3 days, driver-inclusive) typically runs ₹8,000–₹12,000; an SUV for families or larger groups runs ₹12,000–₹18,000. This excludes hotel stays, temple donations, and meals, which are usually booked or paid separately. A local guide at each site (recommended, particularly at Konark) is typically ₹500–₹1,000 per site.
